How to Put on Compression Garments: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide

Putting on compression garments can be a bit challenging at first, but with the right technique, it becomes much easier. The key is to avoid pulling or stretching the garment too much, which can damage the fibers and reduce its effectiveness. A Step-by-Step Guide to Donning Your Garments

For Compression Socks or Sleeves

  1. Prepare Your Skin: Ensure your skin is clean and dry. Moisture can create friction, making the garment harder to pull on. It can also be helpful to apply the garment first thing in the morning before any swelling begins.
  2. Turn the Garment Inside Out: Reach into the garment and grab the heel pocket. Pull it inside out, leaving only the foot part right-side out. This creates a pocket for your foot and avoids the difficult process of pulling the entire length of the fabric up your leg at once.
  3. Place Your Foot and Heel: With the garment inverted, slide your foot into the foot portion and carefully position your heel in the heel pocket. Ensure the seam of the heel is perfectly aligned with your own heel.
  4. Roll It Up Gradually: Grasp the top edge of the garment and start rolling it up your leg in small, gentle motions. Instead of pulling hard, use a “walking” motion with your fingers to inch the fabric up, a few inches at a time. This prevents the material from stretching too thin.
  5. Smooth Out Any Wrinkles: Once the garment is fully on, smooth out any wrinkles or bunching. Wrinkles can create uneven pressure and cause discomfort, so ensure the fabric lies flat and smooth against your skin. The garment should feel snug, but not painful or restrictive.

  1. Prepare Your Skin: Just like with leg garments, ensure your skin is clean and dry.
  2. Place Your Hand: Slide your hand into the sleeve, stopping just before the elbow. Ensure the seam of the garment is positioned correctly along the inside or outside of your arm, as per the design.
  3. Roll It Up Gradually: With your fingers inside the sleeve, gently roll or “walk” the fabric up your arm, from your forearm to your elbow, and then to your shoulder. Avoid pulling too hard on any one section.
